One of the most common questions we receive from prospective students is: which AI certification should I pursue first? The honest answer is that it depends on factors specific to your situation. This guide provides a decision framework based on what we have learned from thousands of students who have completed different certification paths.
The Three Major Cloud AI Certifications
The three certifications that consistently deliver the strongest career outcomes in our placement data are: AWS Certified Machine Learning Specialty (MLS-C01), Google Professional ML Engineer, and Microsoft Azure AI Engineer Associate (AI-102). Each is issued by a major cloud provider, is widely recognized by enterprise hiring managers, and tests practical capability on the platform where significant real-world ML work happens.
Choose AWS If...
AWS is the right starting point if your current employer or target employer uses AWS as its primary cloud infrastructure, if you are targeting data engineering or MLOps roles specifically (AWS has the deepest SageMaker ecosystem), or if you are targeting financial services, retail, or logistics industries, where AWS dominates enterprise ML workloads. AWS ML Specialty is also the highest-demand certification in our hiring partner network by raw job count.
Choose Google If...
Google Professional ML Engineer is the strongest signal for roles at companies working with cutting-edge ML research infrastructure. If you are targeting roles at AI-first companies, large technology companies, or organizations that use Kubernetes and GKE extensively in their ML infrastructure, the Google certification aligns better with the technology stack you will encounter. Vertex AI expertise is increasingly sought after as Google's ML platform gains enterprise adoption.
Choose Azure If...
Azure AI Engineer is the right starting point if your employer or target employer is a Microsoft shop (Office 365, Azure Active Directory, Teams), if you are in healthcare, government, or financial services (industries where Microsoft has strong compliance credentialing), or if you are targeting applied AI roles that emphasize Azure Cognitive Services integration rather than custom model development. The AI-102 also has the lowest technical prerequisite bar of the three, making it a reasonable first certification for professionals with non-ML backgrounds.
What to Do After Your First Certification
Most GetAILearn students pursue a second certification within 12 months of their first. The most common sequence is AWS then Google, or Azure then AWS. Each successive certification becomes easier to prepare for because the foundational ML concepts transfer directly -- only the platform-specific implementation differs. By the time you hold two cloud AI certifications, you are in a genuinely differentiated position in the job market.
